A Gourmet Delight By Way of the Fish Market
I have to hand it to the masterminds behind today’s potato chip flavors. Truly, I must applaud their creativity—or perhaps it’s their ability to turn a simple, once-glorious potato chip into a culinary tour de force.
After all, when I reach for a bag of chips, who wouldn’t want to be whisked away to the briny shores of roasted garlic oyster or the spicy depths of crawfish? I know that when I crave a snack, nothing hits the spot quite like the essence of pickled fish and nori seaweed. Yum!
It’s not that I have anything against traditional potato chips. Oh, no. Original, plain, classic chips are fine, if you’re into that sort of thing. But where’s the adventure in that?
In a world where every other aspect of life is simplified and streamlined, I find it refreshing that potato chips, of all things, are keeping us on our toes. It’s as if the geniuses behind these flavors sat down and said,
“Let’s take the taste experience of biting into a crunchy, salty chip and make it as complex and confusing as humanly possible. We can’t have people just enjoying a snack—we need them to question their life choices!”
Let’s talk about some of these bold choices. I have to admit, the roasted garlic oyster flavor is truly inspired. It’s not every day you find a potato chip that reminds you of low tide.
And spicy crawfish? Absolutely! Because when I think of chips, I think of a sweaty summer boil that leaves me gasping for a drink.
Pickled fish? That’s the flavor I never knew I needed until now. Nothing screams “snack time” like the tangy, fermented aroma of fish, right?
But it doesn’t stop with just the seafood-inspired offerings. Oh no, the adventurous spirit extends to the garden with oregano flavor, because I’ve always thought my chips could use more of a “seasoning left in the pantry for five years” vibe.
Nori seaweed? Perfect for those who want to combine their love of sushi with their love of potato chips, minus the sushi and the love.
Then there’s the rock hot chili squid. A flavor that combines heat with the essence of something vaguely rubbery from the ocean—because why not?
If the idea of squid-flavored anything doesn’t immediately make you salivate, then I don’t know what will.
Of course, we can’t forget the sweeter side of things. Maple bacon is a classic, sure, but what about cinnamon and sugar? Because nothing says “potato chip” quite like a sugary burst to completely confuse your taste buds after that last savory bite.
And really, where would we be if the supermarket aisles weren’t filled with these oddball flavors? I shudder to think of the dull existence we’d lead with only a few varieties of plain, sour cream and onion, or barbecue chips.
Thank you, flavor scientists, for turning my simple snack into a gastronomic adventure—whether I wanted one or not.
